Looking for a Calibre-Web alternative?

Calibre-Web is a popular web interface for an existing Calibre library. If you are weighing other options, here is a fair look at where HomeBranch fits. Check each project's own documentation for their current features.

The main difference

Calibre-Web sits on top of a Calibre library, so Calibre remains the tool you use to import, convert and edit. HomeBranch is a standalone library with its own database and apps. You upload or drop files into it, and it handles metadata, shelves and reading itself.

What HomeBranch offers

  • EPUB, PDF, MP3 and M4B audiobooks
  • Automatic metadata from Open Library, with optional Google Books enrichment
  • A browser EPUB reader with reading position sync
  • Bookshelves, favorites and a Currently Reading list
  • An OPDS catalog (1.2 and 2.0) for e-reader apps
  • Send to Kindle by email
  • Multiple users with roles, and automatic library scanning
  • An optional hosted service, HomeBranch Cloud, so you can skip running a server

When Calibre-Web is the better choice

  • You have a large Calibre library and want to keep using Calibre for conversion and editing.
  • You depend on Calibre features or plugins that HomeBranch does not replace.

When HomeBranch is the better choice

  • You are starting fresh and do not want to maintain a separate desktop Calibre library.
  • You want audiobooks and ebooks in one library.
  • You want the option to use a hosted service instead of running your own server.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my Calibre library into HomeBranch?

HomeBranch scans an uploads folder for EPUB, PDF, MP3 and M4B files, so you can point it at a folder of your books. It does not read the Calibre database directly.

Is HomeBranch free?

Self-hosting is free and open source. HomeBranch Cloud has a free demo plus paid plans.
