How to host your own ebook library

A private ebook library keeps your books in one place that you control, readable in a browser and on your e-reader apps, without tying your collection to one store. There are three common ways to set one up.

Option 1: Self-host on your own server

You run the software on a home server, a NAS, a Raspberry Pi or a small VPS. You own the data and pay only for the hardware or hosting.

  • Needs: a machine that stays on, Docker, and a little time for setup, backups and updates.
  • Good for: people who already run a home lab and want full control.
  • Watch out for: you are responsible for security, backups and remote access.

HomeBranch is free and open source, and runs as three Docker services. The getting started guide has a complete Docker Compose file.

Option 2: Use a hosted service

Someone else runs the server. You sign up, upload your books and read.

  • Needs: an account and a browser.
  • Good for: people who want a library without maintaining a server.
  • Watch out for: you depend on the provider, so check pricing, storage limits and how to export your books.

HomeBranch Cloud offers a free demo with up to 5 books, then plans from $2.99 per month. It is currently available in the United States only.

Option 3: A desktop-only library

Apps such as Calibre manage a library on one computer. This is simple and powerful for organizing and converting books, but reading on other devices needs extra tools or manual copying.

What to look for in any option

  • Formats: EPUB and PDF at a minimum. Audiobook support if you listen as well.
  • Metadata: automatic covers, authors and descriptions save a lot of manual work.
  • Reader access: a web reader and an OPDS catalog so apps like KOReader can connect.
  • Progress sync: keep your place across devices.
  • Backups: your books are only safe if you can restore them.

Which should you pick?

If you enjoy running your own services, self-host. If you just want your books available everywhere, a hosted library is faster to start. HomeBranch supports both, and the self-hosted version stays free.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to host my own ebook library?

Hosting books you own or have the right to store for your own use is generally fine. Do not share copyrighted books you do not have rights to distribute. Laws differ by country, so check the rules where you live.

How much storage do I need?

A typical EPUB is 1 to 5 MB, so a few thousand books fit in well under 20 GB. PDFs and audiobooks are much larger. Plan for growth and keep backups.

Do I need to know Docker?

For HomeBranch self-hosting, basic Docker Compose knowledge is enough. If you would rather not run a server, HomeBranch Cloud hosts it for you.
